On Saturday, May 27, 2023 at 12.45 pm, Fjord Line's MS Stavangerfjord docked at the Port of Kristiansand for its very first ordinary call from Kristiansand. Chairman of the Board Kjell Eirik Haavold, Assistant Port Captain Matthias Eder and Communications Manager Isabelle-Louise Aabel warmly welcomed the ship and crew.
The ship is a cruise ferry that sails between Bergen, Stavanger, Kristiansand and Hirtshals. She was launched on April 12, 2013. MS Stavangerfjord and her sister ship MS Bergensfjord were the first and largest cruise ferries to run on green, environmentally friendly natural gas and have thus made history. The ships are now powered by dual fuel engines that switch between LNG, liquefied natural gas, and MGO, marine gas oil. The ambition is to sail as much as possible on LNG to be a truly sustainable travel alternative.
On board you'll find 380 cabins for accommodation. There are several dining options on board, including a gourmet restaurant with seating for over 60 people where you can enjoy a five-course dinner. On deck 10 you'll find conference facilities for up to 300 people and a beautiful sun deck. Five years ago, they also converted one of the decks into a winter garden where you can enjoy the view and the feeling of being close to the sea during the crossing.
We were warmly welcomed by CEO Brian Thorsted Hansen, who says "we have been looking forward to finally arriving in Kristiansand for the first regular call". We were given a quick tour of the ship and met several very happy passengers. Chairman Kjell Eirik Haavold handed over a crest. "MS Stavangerfjord is a great ship to welcome to the Port of Kristiansand" says Haavold. Haavold goes on to say "for several years we have been working actively with the strategic plan to be a future-oriented and environmentally friendly port. The fact that Fjord Line chooses to deploy two large ferries in addition to FSTR from Kristiansand is an important contributor to achieving that goal. With daily departures and a year-round route, we will be even closer to the continent, which is very important for the entire region in terms of both tourism and business development."
Assistant Port Captain Matthias Eder says that Fjord Line is welcome with its new ships and routes. "The increased activity means a lot for the port, the region and the city," says Eder. Later in June, the sister ship MS Bergensfjord will also arrive in Kristiansand and we look forward to welcoming them to the port.
