Port of Kristiansand to become Norway's leading and most environmentally friendly ferry port

The Port of Kristiansand is the country's second largest ferry terminal and has several daily departures to Hirtshals, Denmark.

The ferries to Denmark have a long tradition and are an important route for the region. In fact, the port of Kristiansand is part of Europavei 39, which continues on the other side of the ferry terminal in Hirtshals. There has been ferry traffic between Kristiansand and Denmark since 1872.

The route to Denmark is operated by the shipping companies Color Line and Fjord Line. Color Line's ferry SuperSpeed 1 has been in operation between Kristiansand and Hirtshals since 2008, while Fjord Line's ferry Fjord FSTR was commissioned in 2021.

Color Line is a Norwegian ferry company with around 3500 employees, of whom around 2000 work on board one of the company's six ships. In Kristiansand, Color Line operates the Kristiansand - Hirtshals route with the ferry "Superspeed 1" and with its top speed of 31 knots, the route is operated with a sailing time of 3.15 hours.

In 2008, "Superspeed" replaced the ships "Silvia Ana" and "Christian IV", which operated between Kristiansand and Hirtshals with a sailing time of 2.5 hours and 4.15 hours respectively.

Color Line was officially established in 1990, but through acquisitions and mergers, the shipping company can boast a much longer and proud history. In fact, the lines can be traced all the way back to the first connection between Kristiansand and Frederikshavn and the ship DS "Frithjof" in 1872.
