The sailing ship Tenacious visits Kristiansand

8. August 2023

On Monday, the sailing ship Tenacious arrived in Kristiansand. The ship had sailed from Arendal, and was part of the Tall Ship Races 2023. Tenacious is based in the UK and is a functioning and unique training ship.

The ship was built in the mid-90s and was launched in 2000. She belongs to the Jubilee Sailing Trust with her home port in Southampton. The ship has three masts, is 27.5 meters at the highest point and 54 meters long. The hull is built in wood and much of the shipbuilding was done by volunteers who wanted to see the ship finished. There are 9 permanent crew on board and they can have up to 44 trainees. This is also the first ship built to accommodate crew with disabilities.

On board you will find that wheelchair access is available throughout the ship, there are four elevators and sleepers to help the visually impaired orient themselves on board. The ship also has a compass equipped with voice control for the visually impaired, and there are vibrator alarms installed for the hearing impaired. On every sailing, there are always several people with a disability as crew on board.

A sailing with Tenacious is much more than a vacation, you are included as crew and everyday tasks on board. Jubilee Sailing Trust and the ship itself have a vision to elevate social inclusion around the world and to leave a footprint in every port they visit. The program is for everyone, and the captain said that the oldest person he had sailed with on board was over 90 years old.

When they dock here in Kristiansand, there are a total of 41 crew members from five different nationalities, with Scandinavia also represented.

The Port of Kristiansand is proud to welcome you to Kristiansand and wish you safe sailing
