Port of the future = Port of Kristiansand IKS

3. November 2023

The Port of Kristiansand IKS has a vision where the entire port works together every day to ensure that we are on our way to becoming the port of the future.

The Port of Kristiansand has a social mission that extends far beyond our areas and employees. The Port of Kristiansand shall be a dynamic, environmentally friendly and future-oriented hub. We shall take care of maritime activities in a way that contributes to increased value creation and a strengthened region. The Port of Kristiansand shall take social responsibility, contribute to the sustainability goals, be a good neighbor and a driving force in green transition and strengthened national and international preparedness.

To succeed in this, we must work in a financially sustainable manner, deliver efficient and modern port services, and be a leading port that contributes to the restructuring of the maritime industry. The port will facilitate the transfer of goods from road to sea by focusing on coastal cargo and short sea shipping. This applies to all business areas in the port, including passenger transport, freight, real estate, offshore activities and fisheries.

In 2019, we conducted a ripple effect analysis led by Danish Gemba, which specializes in the maritime sector. Here we found that the port cluster employed over 9,000 full-time equivalents, business activities amounted to over NOK 22 million with a value production exceeding NOK 7 million. This in turn had a significant impact on tax production and growth at municipal, regional and national level.

The Europe of the future and Norway are undergoing a major transition. This requires a lot from companies and businesses that will be involved in the transition to new, sustainable industries, which in turn requires reporting. When the Port of Kristiansand bases its social responsibility on being a driving force and facilitator for environmentally oriented restructuring, we must also become part of the reporting systems so that we can constantly be measured and work concretely with the tasks that require it. This is why we are now in the middle of the process of becoming ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified.

Becoming ISO certified means that a company is audited by a neutral and independent third party. There are several categories of ISO certifications, and the two the port is currently undergoing are 9001, establishing quality systems, and 14001, environmental management.

"ISO 9001 certification is the work on our quality system. We believe that by doing this work, we as a port will be able to develop into a better employer, supplier, manager of port services and build a culture of continuous improvement. The ISO 14001 environmental management system will be one of the tools that will allow us to continue to be a business that contributes to achieving regional and national goals, for and with our users, while striving every day to be a good and sustainable neighbor to the community around us." Port Director Atle Johannessen

Establishing quality systems - ISO 9001
The ISO 9001 standard provides specific requirements for a quality management system that will improve your ability to consistently deliver products and services that meet customer, regulatory and statutory requirements. ISO 9001 sets out the criteria for a quality management system that focuses on the effectiveness of your quality processes, enabling you to work more efficiently and reduce product failure. It promotes the adoption of a risk-based process approach, emphasizing requirements, added value, process performance and efficiency, as well as continuous improvement through objective measurements.

Environmental management - ISO 14001
ISO 14001 provides a clear management framework to reduce your environmental impacts and ensure you meet legal requirements and build stakeholder confidence. The standard provides your organization with a systemic method for planning, implementing and managing an environmental management system. It provides a framework that an organization can use to deliver environmental performance improvements in line with its environmental policy commitments. ISO 14001 specifies the requirements for an organization to proactively identify and understand the environmental aspects of its activities, products and services and associated environmental impacts and is the most widely recognized international standard for environmental management systems.

Martin Sagedal Holsen and Morten Fronth are working on the ISO certification.

Morten Fronth is responsible for coordinating the ISO 9001 process. Morten has been in the port for a while already. Before he started the job as coordinator for the quality system and action plan for operational work with the strategy, he was at Trainee Sør. There he had placements at Nye Veier and Agder Fylkeskommune before his last placement with us at the Port of Kristiansand. With Morten's background in finance and experience from the region, ISO 9001 is in good hands.

Martin Sagedal Holsen has been with the port for over three years and works with project management in sustainability, renewable energy and development. His professional background as an electrical power engineer and experience from Rambøll means that ISO 140001 is in the best coordinating hands. In addition to this, Martin is also very committed and involved in the Emissions-free Oslofjord project, which means that the pieces are falling into place in the port's work to adapt for the future.

The ISO processes are carried out in parallel with the Port of Kristiansand IKS conducting a new ripple effect analysis similar to the one carried out in 2019 to 2020. We look forward to seeing the changes in the results after years with industry, business, regions and the port itself in transition.
