The new Vige harbour road is now out for tender. The project will be the first step in the relocation of the container terminal to Kongsgård /Vige, and will ensure safe and efficient access to the container port of the future – while also opening up new urban development on Lagmannsholmen.

New Vige harbor road out for tender
The Port of Kristiansand has now announced the tender for the construction of a new Vige harbour road. The new road will ensure stable and efficient access to the planned container terminal area in Kongsgård /Vige, and marks an important first step in the development of the port infrastructure of the future.

Background to the project
Today's Vige harbour road has challenges related to stability and capacity. The road currently runs through Ringknuden with rock cuttings and filling in Urvika. To meet future needs and facilitate the relocation of the container terminal to Kongsgård /Vige, the road will now be rerouted and rebuilt as a safe and modern access route to the port area.

Strategic importance
The road realignment is the first step in a larger effort to secure new land for the future container terminal. Kristiansand Havn IKS is already in full swing preparing the new area in Kongsgård /Vige. The relocation of the container terminal there will make it possible to free up the current container area on Lagmannsholmen and Caledonien, which will eventually be opened up for urban development.
This is the start of a process that will bring major benefits to both the port and the city.

Project scope
The work includes, among other things:

  • New road to the terminal area
  • Geotechnical and engineering geological measures
  • Technical installations (VA and electrical)
  • Demolition of existing road and installations
  • Handling and sorting of masses

The project is advertised as a turnkey contract, and the contract includes both design and construction.

– "The new, rerouted road will now be located on solid and good construction ground, so that freight traffic by car can take place in an efficient manner, where it is also adapted to the design of the new container terminal," says project manager Håkon Nordgaard at the Port of Kristiansand.

The way forward
– We are facing exciting years ahead, with several major projects that will shape both the port and the city. The new Vige harbor road is an important first step on the road to more efficient port operations, while opening up new opportunities for urban development in Kristiansand.
