Strengthens maritime safety when approaching Kristiansand

May 5, 2026

The Norwegian Coastal Administration has established new permanent beacons in Vestergapet and Ullerøysund at the approach to Kristiansand. The measure provides safer and more predictable navigation in weather-prone waters, and at the same time strengthens preparedness along the coast.

Modern solutions for demanding conditions

The new installations replace previous floating marks and provide better visibility and clearer navigation, both for commercial traffic and recreational boats. The area is known for demanding weather conditions, and the upgrade makes it easier to navigate safely, even for vessels that are not familiar with the area. As part of the work, new navigation devices have been established, while existing marks have been upgraded. At Ullerøysund East, a new concrete foundation will also be built in the sea, dimensioned to withstand large wave loads.

All new lighthouses and navigation devices in the project are based on solar energy, which provides more reliable solutions and reduced maintenance requirements.

– We adapt the solutions to both today's needs and the climate of the future. This means more robust constructions and increased use of solar power, says project manager Øystein Flaten at the Norwegian Coastal Administration.

Important collaboration with the Port of Kristiansand

The work has been carried out in close collaboration with the Port of Kristiansand, which has made facilities and resources available along the way.

– The port of Kristiansand is an important partner for us. Here we have good logistics conditions, access to the quay and the possibility of intermediate storage of equipment. This makes the implementation more efficient, says Flaten.

– Safe navigation at sea requires good cooperation and continuous development. This project shows how several parts of the Norwegian Coastal Administration, in collaboration with the Port of Kristiansand, work together to strengthen maritime safety – while developing new and more innovative solutions, says Section Manager Roger Holgersen at the Norwegian Coastal Administration.

Maritime markings are an important part of coastal infrastructure and crucial for both daily traffic and emergency preparedness.

“This is not just about accessibility, but also about preparedness. Good sea marking is a prerequisite for safe traffic along the coast,” says Port Director Atle Johannessen.

The upgrade is part of a larger initiative on the fairway between Kristiansand and Farsund, and contributes to safer traffic and more robust solutions along the coast.
