Kristiansand Port IKS and Glencore Nikkelverk today sign an agreement on the handling and reception of rock masses from ongoing blasting work, including those related to new tunnels and rock halls. The agreement represents a major step for the port's further development and for the region's work with circular economy.

"The agreement with Glencore is an important step for the port's further development. I think it is fantastic that one of the port's largest users in terms of freight is contributing good "building materials" to the development of existing and new port sections," says Port Director Atle Johannessen. The collaboration shows what we can achieve when the industry and the port work in the same direction."

The port plans to receive the rock masses via Pier 20, with sea transport commencing in early March. A tender inspection and a mini-competition for the sea transport itself have been carried out. The masses will be used in development work in front of the ferry terminal and other long-term port projects.

The agreement builds on a long-standing collaboration between the Port of Kristiansand and Glencore, and makes it possible to utilize local resources in a sustainable and efficient manner.

"We are proud to contribute to a solution that both strengthens the port's long-term development and provides added value for the region. For us at Glencore, it is crucial to have a partner that can handle the rock masses in a safe and sustainable way - the Port of Kristiansand has both the expertise and ambitions to make this possible.", says Nils Gjelsten, CEO, Glencore
