Port of Kristiansand: Increased competitiveness, sustainability and value creation

22. November 2024

The Port of Kristiansand has recently achieved ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification, an important step in strengthening both competitiveness and sustainability in the region. The certifications give us a solid foundation for efficient operations and innovation, while contributing to increased value creation for both the region and the local community. With these standards in place, we are better equipped to meet the demands of the future and consolidate our position as a leading player in the European port system.

ISO certification: An important step for quality, sustainability and the social mission of the Port of Kristiansand

The Port of Kristiansand has recently achieved certification according to both ISO 14001 (environmental management) and ISO 9001 (quality management). With approval from DNV and the certificates received, we are now better equipped than ever to meet future demands for sustainability, quality and innovation. This marks an important step in our development as Norway's most accessible port, while strengthening our ability to deliver on our social mission.

ISO certification as a strategic tool

Our vision of being a strategic hub between Norway, Europe and the world means that we must always deliver high quality and future-oriented solutions. The ISO certifications provide us with a solid framework for standardized and efficient operations. ISO 9001 creates a clear structure for quality management, while ISO 14001 helps us to operate sustainably and reduce our climate footprint.

These standards strengthen our ability to meet the high expectations of customers, shipping companies and authorities. At the same time, they contribute to efficient operations, freeing up resources and enabling innovative solutions - from shore power and alternative fuels to digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI).

A sustainable and efficient port

As a port that wants to shift more freight from road to sea, sustainability is an integral part of our strategy. ISO 14001 enables us to systematize our environmental work in a way that creates both clear environmental benefits and economic advantages. Examples are already visible in our shore power offering and waste management services. Future opportunities include charging power and streamlining the freight and ferry terminals, which will also strengthen our position as an environmentally friendly transport hub for southern Norway.

The social mission in practice

The port's social mission is to be a driving force for local and regional businesses through sustainable, accessible and efficient solutions. The ISO certifications give us the tools we need to succeed in this. With standardized systems, we can offer services that meet new requirements from both EU and national authorities, while contributing to security, emergency preparedness and business development in the region.

Collaboration as the key to success

Throughout the process, collaboration has been crucial. From GAP analysis and management workshops to the integration of quality and environmental systems, we have worked systematically to create a holistic approach. This is in line with our mission to adapt to the changing needs of customers and society, while meeting the requirements of the Ports Act and national strategies.

The Port of Kristiansand of the future

The way forward is clear: After ISO 14001 and 9001, we are looking at the possibility of expanding to ISO 45001, which strengthens our HSE work. This builds on our role as a safe and efficient hub for freight, passengers and business.

Through the ISO certifications, we have established ourselves as a port that is more robust, future-oriented and sustainable - for the benefit of the region, Norway and the world. This is the Port of Kristiansand's vision and social mission in practice.
