80 years since liberation – security and preparedness in our time

May 8, 2025

On May 8th, we mark Liberation and Veterans Day. This year marks 80 years since Norway became a free country again after five long years of occupation. At Kristiansand Harbour, we remember those who fought for our freedom, and we recognize the efforts Norwegian veterans have made – and continue to make – for our security and our values. At the same time, this day reminds us that the freedom we took back in 1945 cannot be taken for granted.

A changed Europe
We live in a new and demanding time. Europe is once again characterized by war and instability. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has changed the security policy framework for us in Norway as well. Emergency preparedness and security of supply are no longer something that is only discussed in closed rooms – it concerns us all.

The role of ports in national security
Ports are not only hubs for trade and tourism – they are also part of the national security infrastructure. The Port of Kristiansand plays a crucial role in everything from the supply of fuel and food, to logistics for defense and emergency preparedness. In the face of new threats and needs, it is important that ports are robust, accessible and well integrated into the overall emergency preparedness work.

We honor – and we commit
On this day, we honor those who gave everything for our freedom. But we also look ahead. Our task today is to ensure that the infrastructure, cooperation, and security are in place to meet the challenges of tomorrow – both in peacetime and in crisis.

The Port of Kristiansand should be a safe port. In 1945. Today. And tomorrow.
